The Doug Ford government will permit Sikhs to ride motorcycles without helmets.
“We promised to establish a helmet exemption for Sikh motorcyclists,” Ford said in a statement Wednesday. “Today we are taking action to fulfill that promise. We listened to the Sikh community and we intend to exempt them from the requirement to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle.”
Tory MPP Prabmeet Sarkaria has tabled legislation which if passed, as expected, would grant the exemption.
Currently, the law requires anyone riding a motorcycle in Ontario to wear a helmet.
“The wearing of the turban is an essential part of the Sikh faith and identity, and exemptions for Sikhs have been successfully implemented in other provinces in Canada and across the world,” Sarkaria said in a statement.
B.C., Manitoba and Alberta also allow Sikhs to forgo a helmet when riding a motorcycle.
