Ontario’s Police watchdog is investigating after a 61-year-old man died Saturday during a standoff north of Stratford.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of the man in Perth East. The death happened after police fired anti-riot plastic projectiles at the man.
OPP officers responded to a home at about 4:50 p.m. Saturday after receiving calls about a domestic dispute. The OPP emergency response and tactical units were also called to the scene.
Police closed Perth Line 49 between Perth Road 135 and Perth Road 140, north of Stratford, for several hours.
In a statement Sunday, the SIU said OPP officers encountered a man, contained him on the property and began to negotiate with him.
At some point, plastic projectiles, used in riot situations, were fired at the man.
A short time later, the SIU said, the man suffered a gunshot wound and died at the scene at 10:15 p.m.
